For rural and remote patients, these advances prove to be transformative. “There are people in Northern Ontario who would otherwise need to fly into the city for routine checks,” Dr. Thakur notes. “Sometimes their issue do not require a trip to an urban centre and being able to make those decisions before hand are a saviour to our healthcare system.” 

The Canadian Medical Association states that “About 20% of Canadians (~8 million people) live in a rural, remote, indigenous, coastal, or northern community, but only 8% of physicians practice in those regions.”
