We are very excited to share that our very own Dr. Mahla Abdolahnejad has been named as the Best Machine Learning Practitioner by AIMed!
Dr. Abdolahnejad is already a published author, and it was only a matter of time before she would be recognized on the international stage.
However, while she is the one receiving the award, she wanted to make sure that everyone understood that it was a team effort from others at Skinopathy who made it possible, particularly Rakesh Joshi (Ph.D., MMAI), Hannah Chan, MD (IMG), MHM, and Gus Lo.
The award was related to our work on the ABCDE pipeline for screening melanoma.
In other words, it is one thing for an AI to tell you the probability that a mole might be melanoma. It is a completely different thing for an AI it to tell you WHY it might be a melanoma.
The AI that was developed by Dr. Abdolahnejad and her team is able to provide values for the Asymmetry, Border, Colours, Diameter of a mole, and its Evolution. This gives patients and healthcare practitioners much more data on the best course of action.
This is part of new standard in machine learning that AI should be able to “show their work” whenever giving results.
Dr. Abdolahnejad joined Skinopathy as a Mitacs Scholar in 2021 and we quickly brought her on fulltime when her placement was done.
Take a bow, Dr. Abdolahnejad! You deserve it!
